Guidance for measurement

Here you will find various instructions to measure your dog exactly. Please follow the instructions exactly, so that we can make your ordered articles tailor-made.

If you order a collar, we would be very grateful if you would inform us of your dog's neck circumference (for example by using the contact form or by email). In the case of collars with a ridge buckle, we then make the collar of your dog so that the middle hole of the pier corresponds precisely to the neck circumference of your dog. So you have up to max. 1.6 in "reserve" up and down.

Neck circumference

Leather4Paws produces the new collar without extra charge exactly according to the size of your dog, so that this fits also later perfectly.

Please take a measuring tape or similar and put it around your dog's neck (see the orange lines in the illustration below) that this is tight but does not pinch your dog's air for breathing - it should be just as firm as the new collar should be later.

Please do not take the neck circumference from a previous collar! Although it is easier and less effort to measure, but usually the measured measurements do not agree, because there are many variations of collars.

To make sure you get a collar made by Leather4Paws, please print this sheet, enter the measurements in inches and send it to uwe.otto@leather4paws.de after you ordered the collar in the webshop

How to find the right size for the new Martingale collar of your dog

How to find the right size for the new Martingale collar of your dog

A small remark in advance:

To prevent misunderstandings - pull-stop collars are no suffocating collars, at least not when they are made in the right size. That is why we need a few measures from your dog.

Pull stop collars can be carried by just about all dogs - not only greyhounds. The narrowest part of the head is behind the ears in windhounds and greyhound-like breeds (wind play, etc.). That is, the neck circumference is larger than the circumference of the head. Thus, these dogs can often slip out of "normal" collars often simply. These collars are loosely pulled over the head and then sit loosely and comfortably at the neck.

Please take a measuring tape or similar and put it around your dog's neck (see the orange lines in the illustration below) so that this is tight but does not pinch your dog's breathing - it should be just as firm as the new collar should be later. It is a good thing for the dog to be standing and raising his head.

Next, please measure the circumference from the lower chin up to 2 fingers wide behind the ears (green line)

If your dog is not a greyhound, a third dimension (the largest circumference of the head) must be taken - this is usually the strongest part of the head above the eyebrows and directly in front of the ears.

Please do not take the neck circumference from a previous collar! Although it is easier and less effort to measure, usually the measured measurements do not agree, because there are many variations of collars.

This is how you determine the appropriate measurements for your dog's new Norwegian harness

This is how you determine the appropriate measurements for your dog's new Norwegian harness

Red line: belly circumference

The circumference of the belly is measured around the belly about three fingers wide away from the shoulder joint from the fore leg. This is important because the harness should not rub in the dog’s armpits. Please measure all around the chest - best with a cloth-measuring tape. The measuring tape should be tight.

Green line: chest belt

This is measured as follows: given where the abdomen circumference was measured before (about three fingers wide after the shoulder joint) once around the breast to the exactly opposite side.

Blue line: instep

The site, which is measured across the back from three fingers wide behind the shoulder joint to the opposite side, is called instep. This length determines the height at which the chest strap will lie. The height must be such that the dog is not disturbed or hindered during walking by the chest strap. So from about the middle of one side of the stomach to the middle of the other side of the belly (depending on the anatomy of your dog, it can vary slightly) - exactly where the red and the green line are crossing. Please make sure that the armpits of your dog remain free. To enable Leather4Paws making a harness the fits perfectly please print this sheet, enter the measurements in inches and mail it to uwe.otto@leather4paws.de.

Red line: belly circumference

The circumference of the stomach is about three fingers wide to the shoulder of the fore legs. This is important for not to rub the harness in the dog's armpits. Measure all around the chest - best with a cloth-measuring tape. The measuring tape should be tight. Please do all this without an encore.

Green line: chest strap

Please note that the chest strap is not measured horizontally but discreetly downwards (angle of approx. 35 degrees). The chest strap touches the waist belt at the back of the dog - this is usually in a little distance from the neck. The measuring tape is attached to the skin.
